"Three days until it all ends" email title sounds rather like a threat than something they want to sell me

TIL: Don't start an electron-based program while you are compiling a large C++ project with 16 threads while you have only 32 GB of RAM that are almost full.

This is how I learned I didn't set up swap on this computer. Everything froze, music began to stutter, playing fragments in a loop, then it stopped.

*visible confusion*

After 20 sec laptop came to life again. dmesg says "Killed process ... (electron)".

Best case: Don't use electron-anything. Ever.

Software was a mistake...

@daniel_bohrer the advantage of perl is that gzip compressing it does not make the code less legible

Stimmt. Nur schreddert die halt nicht alle Akten sobald jemand nachfragt wie das denn passieren konnte.

Zoom acquired Keybase today.

Keybase helped me to identify a trend in the software industry: using a pretty UI to cover up the disruption of an open ecosystem with a closed, centralized replacement. Keybase seemed cool on the face of it - making encryption easier is a laudible goal, and PGP certainly could use the improvement. But, thanks to Keybase, now I ask different questions upfront.

Beware the Keybase formula:

1. Integrates with an existing, open ecosystem
2. May have open-source clients, but server is closed source and does not federate
3. Pretty UI and good marketing
4. VC funded

The run-down look of gitweb always makes me feel like I am infiltrating some kind of secret military base.

Google memories (1/x)

y'all going to laugh, but I really believed it. I drank the kool-aid. this was the mid-00s, a tech company with a motto "don't be evil" still felt daring rather than cringe – for an alienated techie like past me, at least; my politically aware friends tried to warn me; but I didn't realise that Google leveraged its fine-tuned advertising machinery also for recruiting, and I swallowed the whole thing.

Ok, I wanted to be cautiously optimistic about #Microsoft and #Linux, but as suspected they didn't take long to reveal their 90s self.

Getting massive headlines from the mainstream "tech press" about how they're bringing Linux GUI apps to #Windows, as if that somehow served anyone else but #Microsoft trying to compel developers not to leave their platform.

Fortunately, WSL2 is still a massive pile of crap, so good luck with that.
