And where/how do I host a website that needs to sustain high traffic spikes when I don't want to go with the big players Amazon/Cloudflare etc?

@ConnyDuck ehhh if you don't care too much about the dynamic parts caching will do fine. depending on the expected traffic i'd put one or two layers of cheap-y vps with a caching reverse proxy
@ConnyDuck how much traffic are we talking about? hetzner vps have 20 tb for free so thats plenty.
@felix its about the bandwith and not the volume
@ConnyDuck hetzner doesnt have bandwidth guarantees for vps but it should be more than enough for a website (its definitely enough for peertube.social)
@ConnyDuck if it will be DDOS, you will need proper solution but if it's just static content than every bucket of bolts with nginx can server really lots of people imo
