Hi, my name is Dan and I use They/He pronouns.
By day I'm a Platform Security Engineer, with a focus on container & cloud security, tooling and automation.
The rest of the time, I enjoy playing and (more often) GMing #DnD 5e, #photography (generally wildlife and landscape), good #coffee, cooking and #gardening. I'd love to learn machining, blacksmithing and welding.
I'm very politically left, occasionally post about #ADHD & other #mentalhealth stuff.
Nice to meet you! #introduction
It's been a long wait, but #emfcamp2022 has been an incredible experience. Getting to catch-up with old friends I've not seen in years, making some new friends, raving to drum and bass in a tent full of smoke and laser, getting to do more blacksmithing. I've missed this so much.
Debugging MQTT connectivity issues, flashing ESP8266 boards and scripting a process for auto configuring said boards, in a field, to a Spotify playlist of pop punk.
#emfcamp22 #emfcamp prep is in full swing!
Wonderful, looks like we'll be pitching the massive tent @gsuberland and I have hired in the rain tomorrow. For reference, this is the tent we're going to be contending with: https://www.leisureoutlet.com/tents/tents-by-style/family-tents/151604-coleman-rocky-mountain-5-plus-xl-family-tent
It's 5m long by 3m wide. I've never used a tent this big.
Heading down to #EMFCamp2022 tomorrow to help with build up, and I do not feel ready. Got to drop my dog off at my mother in law's for the week (2h round trip), pack (my packing list is about 90 items long at this point), meal prep for my wife while I'm away and get some chores done. Just feels like it's snuck up on me.
Spring where I live is great for nature photography. Randomly spotted an emperor moth just chilling on the pavement while walking the dog this evening.
Last one for now, taken a couple of years ago. We've got a Stag's Horn Sumac tree at the bottom of our garden that we used to have a bird feeder hanging in. I love the colours of the leaves in this photo, and especially that I managed to catch one of the robins that visit at thee feeder.
This is one of my favourite photos that I took while in Iceland in 2019 on my older Sony SLT camera.
Sadly I lost a lot of the originals from that trip, but I've got exported JPEGs of some of my favourites, and a painful reminder to automate backups of my photos.
These three are some experimental #macro shots of some of our houseplants from a couple of years ago. I was experimenting with some cheap macro extension tubes I picked up to see if they'd fit most of the uses I'd have for a much more expensive proper macro lens.
Next up is a landscape I took at Grafham Water reservoir and nature reserve in Cambridgeshire last weekend on my phone. To say it was a fairly quick snap while on a walk with family, I'm rather pleased with how it turned out.
A few years ago I made this flow chart of which Mastodon posts end up in which timelines!
So, you can see how each instance will have a different local timeline, and even a slightly different federated timeline - and you can see why the federated timeline moves so much faster than the local one, too.
This is why it's important to boost good posts and use hashtags - the fediverse is fragmented and harder to search by nature.
