If you're new to the Fediverse, here's what made the platform work for me: aggressively following and unfollowing new people.

Whatever standards you've built up on Twitter for deciding to follow someone, throw them out the window. Follow someone because they made a funny or insightful post. Follow someone because their bio says they like pesto. Follow someone because they have a cute fursona. Anything really.

Following is free. And if it doesn't work out, unfollowing is also free.

@evelyn Fact: 9/11 was planned via Twitter DMs but due to the strong encryption they couldn’t be stopped. It was only when Osama joined a mastodon instance and his admin read his DMs that his location was discovered

My brother in Christ, what do you think Elon Musk is doing to Grimes’ account right now

posting "punch nazis" on twitter: banned for inciting violence

@aeonofdiscord @Ronflaix no, moderators can't leisurely browse DMs. the moderation interface will only show a DM if it's been attached to a report, and only in the context of that report

direct database access is still possible but [people who can do arbitrary queries on the database] and [people who have access to the moderation and/or admin interface] are not necessarily the same group of people

sure people can just read dms on here, sure the incentive not to do so is lower than if you were employed by big scary corporation, but:
1. we make it very clear that dms are not a private means of communication
2. you fucking know who your admins are, you do not on twitter
3. you can just run your own single user instance if this is a big concern for you
4. idk some random admin randomly deciding to read my dms is way less of a concern to me than twitter just firehose streaming DMs to intelligence agenciea

@riley during my brief stint at Zynga, I learned that the little “bits” that fly out of things you click on and bounce before going into various inventories and point counters? Those are called “doobers”.

And, of course, we had a singleton to handle the pool of them, the DooberManager.

So when you clicked on an object that was ready to be clicked, it called DooberManager.doob(doober);

Oh hey, Elon Musk is buying Twitter eh?

Hi, did I ever mention that I worked on a decentralized social networking protocol called ActivityPub, the most popular in the world right now? Oh hey, you're probably using it right now! w3.org/TR/activitypub/

Or did I mention that we're building next-generation internet tech over at @spritelyproject? spritelyproject.org/

It's all true!
