It's crazy how much faster a spinning wheel is compared to a hand spindle, where you have to stop and roll up the yarn every meter or so. Additionally you have way more control over twist.

My old spinning wheel had Irish tension which is the other way round: the drive belt moves the bobbin and I have a leather strap as break on the flyer. There's also double drive where is no break and instead two driving belts with different speeds.

They work because of a difference in rotation speed between the bobbin and the flyer. So you have different drive choices:
I have a scotch tension where I drive the flyer (dark rubber band) and have a break string (light string) around my bobbin.
