Kenya bans LGBT+ documentary "I Am Samuel"

via Frank Mugisha/Twitter

“What does it mean to be a Kenyan religious man in a country that criminalises your love? We thought that it was important to share this story because it is a Kenyan story.”

The government has warned that anyone who attempts to “exhibit, distribute, broadcast or possess” the film in Kenya will be met “with the full force of the law”.

@distel It is necessary to add the fact, that criminalization of love is yet another colonial damage. As many people know, the UK were first in raiding, raping, stealing from, maiming, killing, enslaving, short: colonizing, other peoples.
They exported their twisted Puritan views of sexuality, suppressing the usually more liberal sexual customs of the invaded land.
To this day, many formerly colonized countries have to deal with this fallout.

@carl if I'm informed correctly, on top of all that, western (US but also Europe) evangelical groups are continuing this with heavily influencing African churches, and the catholic church does as well.

@distel True, this happens to this present day.
And fuck the missionary position ;-)

@carl ah lol don't lead me into temptation to make another pun.

@distel The same original liberal views on sexualities have been used as an attempt of "ethical" justification of colonialism and racism: "We need to bring culture to the uncivilized" aka as the concept of "The white man's burden".
The same concept is used today (yes, I am looking at you, white gays and lesbians!), to "bring enlightened culture" to the "ancient morals" of (formerly) colonized countries.

Apalling.

@distel As examples on the topic of sexualities, except the western definition of sexuality:
For the Americas: Navajo gender concepts (indiancountrytoday.com/archive)
For Afrika: "Boywives and Female Husbands" (soar.suny.edu/handle/20.500.12)
For Asia: Katoyes in Thailand (maytermthailand.org/2015/04/27)
For Oceania: Gender roles of the Maori (waikato.ac.nz/law/research/wai)

And that was just a real quick search. There is much more!

@distel Disclaimer: I am indebted to and would like to thank Prof. Maria do Mar Castro Varela, who gave me first insight on those yet other aspects of colonialism.
