My issue with CWs is that you are deciding for yourself what others should consider "sensitive" content. The trouble with that fir me is there are some people who are sensitive about really niche things. I understand putting a CW on NSFW media; because that could get you in trouble at work. But putting CWs on anything else is a bit over-the-top for me. I just saw someone asking for CWs on holiday posts because it makes that person sad... Seems a bit much for me! 😅

@davidpgil It also involves having to share personal information about yourself. This puts people that value their privacy more at a loss since they can't talk about what it is that triggers them.

Doing things at your own locus of control is more effective - taking a day off offline or somewhere else (ie read a book), adding words to filter out, have better coping mechanisms even, and so on.

@hcs i think that use case makes sense to me. but i think asking others to put a CW on something that triggers them is a bit much, no?

@davidpgil
I'd actually prefer a UI whereby each toot consists of a subject line. If interested, click and read toot. Else, leave collapsed.

Ok, yes, I'm just describing usenet. Yes, I want Usenet .

@klaatu I like that idea actually. Its true that a title of a book or movie is also a "Content Warning" usually, but I like the idea of a Title or Subject usage as opposed to some protection mechanism. Eventhough functionally they are very similar to CW.

@davidpgil @klaatu #usenet really *was* the original, longer posting version of #mastodon

masto is just generally easier to manage, web based and API-ed.

@klaatu @davidpgil seeing how society works these days, we'll get clickbait title instead of real one.

Moreover, it's an UX nightmare. What if the user want to always have them expanded but still collapsed for real CW contents.

@klaatu @davidpgil

reddit's code used to be published, and the folx at raddle.me are running it. they're anarchists/leftists and have been pretty transparent.

@davidpgil yeah that'a going way too far. These people don't need CWs they need mental health

@feld I don't fault people for being harmed by our incredibly overstimulated society, but I think for them its just something they need to work around at least as far as the public is concerned. Family and friends can help them with all the support they would like to provide.
