The lie about saying that “information should be free” is the underlying conceptual assumption that information is existentially a commodity and not, as it is in fact, a construction of the user that comes into existence only as they seek to solve their knowledge needs. (This is the theory of information as sense-making.)

Users should be free to seek the knowledge and make sense of the world as necessary to solve their problems. When information is treated as a thing with its own independent existence, instead of as a verb, then it becomes pliable to be treated as source of profit and power, and thus to deprive users of their capacity for sense-making.

Liquor store clerk: I'm gonna need to see some ID.

Me: So back in the #demoscene days I ran a BBS with #ANSI art, where people use the full IBM codepage 437 to draw pictures that are then sent over a modem in a pre-Internet age —

It took less than two hours for Donald Trump's new social media to collapse under the weight of embarrassment. Trump's own account was quickly compromised and proceeded to post a photo of a pig defecating on its own scrotum. Access to the site is now shut down.

Based off the chatter I see today it looks like Donald Trump's new social media platform "Truth Social" is a fork of Mastodon.

The platform hasn't yet "gone public" (and as far as I can tell, hasn't yet expressed an interest in federating) but some instance moderators are already following the process of blocking federation between their servers and truthsocial.

OH NO! CARMEN SANDIEGO HAS STOLEN YOUR idea for a blockchain startup!

I turn on my PC.

The local wildlife are immediately sterilised by the excessive output from my four exposed nuclear reactors running at a critically risky heat output.

The sound of 10,000 cooling fans deafens the city’s morning traffic as my warehouse of 500 parallel-chained AMD Razer Threadrippers bursts into life, forming the equivalent processing power of 2015 in one room.

Nearby, my cluster of Nvidia 5090 Test Cards begins to warp the local time continuum as they calculate answers man was never meant to know.

Very gently, I open Microsoft Teams.

Instantly, the already deafening noise of fans increases to a murderous wail as they try to keep my equipment at operating temperatures. A nuclear reactors’ fusion catches up with its cooling and explodes destroying the lives of millions. The floor begins to melt away as my processors over clocked ten-fold reach critical mass and descend directly into hell. My Nvidia cluster collapses into a singularity and begins to devour the planet.

Quickly now, I open a text chat, it’s a bit laggy.

The sheer struggle of loading some text destroys the remaining systems. Me and my equipment are deleted from reality by an unknown overseer.

hey have you heard that the IPCC released a new report of critical importance on August 9, 2021, and you wanted to read it but it's a bunch of fucking PDF files and that's not working out for you?

WELL COOL cause i extracted all the text for you and put it in per-chapter HTML files and I also dug up the actual long descriptions of the future scenarios they use throughout the report without explaining them for SOME REASON???

anyway here you go

there's also unbelievable power in insincerity. i mean that.

the way the alt-right frequently does not maintain a coherent argument when you interact with INDIVIDUALS channelling the views of the alt-right? the way their logic, their views, their counter-arguments... seem fluid? flexible?

at its core it is insincerity obscuring genuine views, even when the views are pretty explicitly expressed. and to obscure with insincerity is both dangerous and powerful.

the power is that when you model communication on that basis, the range of discussion is as narrow as one sentence or so. logic and values don't have to be coherent, it's more about point-scoring in the moment and in comparing your sentence with theirs. that can be good in arguments. it's freeing

the danger though is that when you internalise insincerity, by default you don't trust what others say. it's not possible to communicate with people directly, because they expect to use words in a non-euclidian meta-unreality that's adjacent to communication.

and so you can't teach, learn, discuss, consider, criticise. you can't see the truth of a thing and sit with it. and the conduits of the ideology are trapped in their own maze, at the same time unaware of its existence and unable to reach out or listen to people outside of it.
