In addition to the expanded data gathering, the upgrades will also make the data of millions of visitors searchable by law enforcement and Frontex, the EU's external border agency. NGOs have raised concerns about Frontex's treatment of migrants and their personal data. (2/4)

This comes as the Commission plans to increase the duration for which this data is retained from 18 months to 5 years, despite an ECJ ruling that limited passenger data retention to the period of the stay. (3/4)
