I can't begin to describe how much this and all the messages from friends and strangers alike throughout the past weeks have helped me go through with the emergency break and shown me that I'm not fighting alone.
Thank you all so much, it means a ton! 💚
@foosel just saw your post on the local timeline and as someone who also struggled with mental health and an enthusiastic user of octoprint I wish you a restful mental health break.
@vanilla_chief Break is already over again since Wednesday, but the last 2.5weeks were spent catching my breath and making plans for mitigation strategies. There'll be some changes in OctoPrint and more chances to easily contribute in the future - I hope 😅
And I'm also taking things slower.
@foosel ahh, I see. Looking forward to the changes in Octoprint, but please keep taking things slow.
@foosel there are so many messages out there pushing the hustle culture, that at times it seems like admitting failure, or weakness, or defeat when you share stories of burnout
But I feel it's important, and a brave thing to do. We're all human, we all have our own struggles
Being honest about them helps people understand what you are going through, but more importantly, helps them see they're not alone.
Thanks so much for sharing
@TomLarrow That's actually also why I share. Even though it sometimes feels like I'm admitting defeat and failure, I know how much it helps me when I read about this, precisely because it shows me I'm not alone, and because it normalized self care for me. So I'm trying to make something good come out of a shitty situation by at least talking about it as well 😅
@foosel agreed. Going through it sucks, and I want to do whatever I can to help people avoid it. I once told the Wall Street Journal about my burnout, hoping it would help. Unfortunately they turned it into an article about the great resignation.
But even giving talks at work, I've always spent the next few days chatting with coworkers over instant message who just appreciate hearing that they aren't alone in what they're going though
@foosel the dialog is so important to normalize what people are going through. It's not like when I tore my Achilles. Everyone could see the cast, and knew I was hurting
Mental health, and many other things aren't visible. So talking about them is so important
