While you may disable the usage of cookies through your browser settings, the Airbnb Platform currently does not respond to a “Do Not Track” signal in the HTTP header from your browser or mobile application due to lack of standardization regarding how that signal should be interpreted.”
It’s apparently too hard for them to understand what we mean we we say don’t track me...
Many people willfully trade the time and patience for privacy invading options. We can do better. Let’s fix the exchange rate.
When will privacy promoting options be easy for the every day consumer?
Spent a good deal of this weekend installing Snips assistant on a new RPi to communicate with Home Assistant. Even as someone well versed in technology, it was definitely not simple. I had tabs on tabs on tabs of various debugging searches going.

Perfect is the Enemy of Good
I am struck my this quite often. In my quest for a robust system for managing my personal servers I end up spending significant amounts of time researching new tools and making edits to my configuration.
The truth is, what I have is probably good enough. A little manual work every time I set up a new server (maybe once a year?) is not with the stress.
At least I am learning about new things!
Just wrote a new blog post describing my move away from the "free" public cloud and a list of the services I'm now self-hosting. https://blog.iamthefij.com/2019/10/25/whats-in-a-cloud/

Since I’ve been dabbling in #selfhosting and #homeautomation, I’m looking to overhaul my home #networking to run more ethernet, get better coverage with multiple access points, and improve performance and security by setting up several vlans. Any tips on what kind of hardware I should check out? Looking for low wattage and moderately high performance.
Phew! 9th circuit ruled against LinkedIn saying that scraping a public site does not qualify as a CFAA violation. This is good for the public and probably still good for engineers hired to write anti-scraping detectors. 😉
Haven’t read the whole thing to identify if there are other implications such as preventing scraping. Also imagine just because you scrape it doesn’t mean you have rights to reproduce it.
Today I got promoted to IT manager position after my proposal got approved by the management to use multiple open source solutions and replace propriety products the company is using.
Tests went well and they were happy with the services. I will be handling the migration and training for the coming months.
To thank the wonderful open source community I will be donating a part of my pay for the coming 3 months.
I built a blog with #Hugo!
Feel free to give me some feedback ;-)
Just made some updates to Dockron. It's a lightweight tool for scheduling periodic starts of Docker containers in a way that is Docker native. If you run periodic Docker jobs but not ready to dive into something like k8s, take a look at my blog post.
