re: poll for trans people on hrt, :boost_ok:

@julialuna can i vote for "i am my own endo" and "sort of" at the same time? :P

poll for trans people on hrt, :boost_ok:

@julialuna I educated my doctor on some of the side effects, this is one of two places in my city that you can get HRT from.

poll for trans people on hrt, :boost_ok:

@squeakypancakes i should've added the option "i had to educate my doctors"..

poll for trans people on hrt, :boost_ok:

@julialuna When I lived in upstate New York I saw an endo who I was the first trans person they ever met. I was not the only trans person in town but I think this was the only endo in town.

poll for trans people on hrt, :boost_ok:

@julialuna my endo prescribed 50 friggin mgs of daily cypro right out of the bat. to somebody who did not even want cypro.

poll for trans people on hrt, :boost_ok:

@elilla well that's just irresponsible and dangerous ;-;
shit like this is why i don't trust endos

poll for trans people on hrt, :boost_ok:

@julialuna #poll #trans

Poll is in the parent of the parent toot; hashtags don't work unless the visibility's set to public.

poll for trans people on hrt, :boost_ok:

@wizzwizz4 ah shit, didn't know that, thanks

poll for trans people on hrt, :boost_ok:

@julialuna I started DIY and then looked for a real expert in trans hrt. My endo held a talk with q&a at our local support group, so I got a good impression of their 20+ years expertise. Besides the usual checks, blood, liver US etc, they always 1st ask 'how are you, is everything well, do you want to change anything'. They always offer solutions and explain the pros & cons. Can't ask for more, right?

poll for trans people on hrt, :boost_ok:

@jaddy that does sound pretty good tbh

poll for trans people on hrt, :boost_ok:

@julialuna my PCP writes my prescriptions and in three years has never asked anything of consequence or mentioned anything useful when i go to get it refilled besides "oh you want the testosterone refilled", and has never reccomended i get bloodwork or get any levels checked lol

poll for trans people on hrt, :boost_ok:

@jude_ that is.. quite concerning, oh no

poll for trans people on hrt, :boost_ok:

@julialuna I've been to several doctors and none of them knew what they were doing until I stopped asking them to regulate my dosage

poll for trans people on hrt, :boost_ok:

@julialuna I am between endos due to COVID-19 precautions and went on DIY before that because I had to switch to patches which were not working and switched myself to injections without talking to the endo about it… where does that put me in your poll? 🤔

poll for trans people on hrt, :boost_ok:

@lexi that puts you on diy in my opinion, you could also vote as if you were with your previous endo i guess

if you have questions regarding diy you can just boop me

poll for trans people on hrt, :boost_ok:

@julialuna Do you want to be my endo?

poll for trans people on hrt, :boost_ok:

@zenja if you want me to be i will c:

poll for trans people on hrt, :boost_ok:

@julialuna mine just asks "got any side effects you don't like? no? well your levels are below the maximum safe amount, so unless you wanna change anything, ur good"

doctors, money , transmisia

@julialuna no one did until I switched this month.

Now I’m with someone who knows what they’re doing and actually cares.

First endo I had misgendered me, "corrected" me whenever I just said HRT that it’s "cross gender HRT" (don’t know how to translate "gegengeschlechtliche") and wrote me a huge bill (I did not really have a health insurance or income at that time)

Second didn’t care after the first appointment and just gave me my prescription for 2.5 years without seeing me once.

Third was okay but suddenly canceled my appointment because they’ve stopped treating "transsexuals."

doctors, money , transmisia

@dysphoricunicorn @julialuna wow what a jerk, to just stop treating transgender people

poll for trans people on hrt, :boost_ok:

@julialuna All my endos sort of know what they are doing but not well, I was DIY from the beginning and had to educate my first endo to get the correct prescription from her, and I was not as successful with my current one (but I still use him for prescription reasons)

re: poll for trans people on hrt, :boost_ok:

@julialuna I've been in an ongoing argument with mine over whether taking some T after GRS is gonna like blow up my heart. After having gone unsuppressed beforehand.

So yea, not impressed.

poll for trans people on hrt, :boost_ok:

@julialuna I go to planned parenthood, and they basically prescribe what I ask for so long as it’s a med they will prescribe. It’s weird.

poll for trans people on hrt, elaboration 1

@julialuna
Voted yes. Elaboration: i have met my endo once. She wasn't too familiar with being nonbinary, asked me to explain gender experiences a little and when i hesitated too long she clarified i didn't need to justify myself, just so she knows a bit more abt experience. She asked what effects i wanted from HRT and i stated running over what i wanted / was unsure about but okay with;

poll for trans people on hrt, elaboration 2

@julialuna
turns out it was just a way to check i understood hrt and knew what i was getting into.

I have only had one appt with the endo so far (after 6months), was supposed to have one this month but she was running behind so should be next month.

Our region is a little unusual in that i go to the hospital and have the endo nurse inject me, and she also seems very competent.

poll for trans people on hrt, elaboration 3

@julialuna
It's not rly relevant with my GPs, but they've been fine when it has, with one exception of a guy who woulda been relatively good like, 20years ago.

Had a little bit of "are u sure abt this? Bc some people decide "well I'm just me" and opt not to transition," and my medical records now have within them "[assigned pronoun] identifies as [other binary]." and then uses other binary pronouns, courtesy of this guy.

poll for trans people on hrt, :boost_ok:

@julialuna I'm super lucky and able to go to an informed consent clinic. I don't have an endo, but the clinic basically exists for queer people so my GP is pretty familiar with HRT for someone who isn't an endocrinologist.

He basically just asks me if I like what I'm on and prevents me from making obvious mistakes.

poll for trans people on hrt, :boost_ok:

@julialuna my first endo (the only one covered by health insurance in my city) was bad, but now I'm going to on that lots of other trans people go to, and he actually knows what he's doing! Also always asks how I am, how I'm feeling, both about the HRT and like in general, he checks my bloodworks, checked my liver the first time I got there... He's really good!

re: poll for trans people on hrt, :boost_ok:

@julialuna Eh, I know mine are clueless. :blobrage: Its actually really depressing.

poll for trans people on hrt, :boost_ok:

@julialuna hoo boy do I have some stories. So, I am trans and diabetic, which means that during the two year period when I was on HRT I saw a LOT of endos and continue to for diabetes.

My current endo is incredible. I was referred to her for diabetes but when we went over my medical history and she found out I’m trans, she asked smart, tactful questions about T use and surgery and then wrote a referral for top surgery while on our first phone call

poll for trans people on hrt, :boost_ok:

@cosmic woah you found a unicorn there :o

poll for trans people on hrt, :boost_ok:

@julialuna she remains, to date, the only medical professional I have ever met in my 10 years of being an openly trans diabetic who understands both trans medical care and diabetes. This is a massive problem because if I recall correctly, some forms of hrt for trans women can present an increased risk of becoming a type 2 diabetic later in life

poll for trans people on hrt, :boost_ok:

@julialuna the actual doctor who prescribed me my hrt when I was on it was a kind but scatterbrained woman who asked every patient if they were “mtf or ftm”, including one trans patient who was seeing her as hormone follow up after having his ovaries and uterus removed. She was lovely but she was one of the only doctors in my entire province who openly made it known they would prescribe hrt on the informed consent model

poll for trans people on hrt, :boost_ok:

@julialuna she had something like 50 trans patients for hrt when I saw her, on top of her regular clients. It wasn’t a trans clinic or anything it was literally just one doctor who people spread the word about bc in Newfoundland most doctors were just like “lol idk how to do that” and did nothing

poll for trans people on hrt, :boost_ok:

@julialuna when she got my blood work back she thought she would be the one having to give me the bad news about being diabetic bc she didn’t check her notes from our appointment I guess lmao. I was like no actually those numbers are pretty good for me! So yeah. Both ends of the well meaning spectrum there.

I also had a diabetic health nurse give me info about T leading to cardiovascular issues in “women” and therefore not being recommended once

poll for trans people on hrt, :boost_ok:

@julialuna I don’t have an endo, but my general practitioner is awesome and know what she is doing.

poll for trans people on hrt, :boost_ok:

@julialuna @vy voted “sort of,” but only to the extent that Medicine In General doesn’t know wtf we’re doing; my actual doctor gets full marks personally

poll for trans people on hrt, :boost_ok:

@julialuna “Sort of” because they’re very helpful and supportive and have a lot of experience but they’re also cis and I get a sense they’re just applying a standard template.

poll for trans people on hrt, :boost_ok:

@julialuna "sort of" because she's totally adequate for my needs, there's simply not much you can do wrong with T. She talks a bit of annoying bullshit now and then and I'm annoyed by that, but well. It's cool that she's super open to people's wishes and ideas and willing to try new things. But I've heard from folks who get other stuff from her that she doesn't necessarily recommend safe amounts.

re: poll for trans people on hrt

@julialuna yeah, where do you all find endos that sort of know what they're doing, i want one of these too
