hey if you're a computer person would you like to fill out this form to see how well known these cursed computer things are?

docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAI

i legit picked up the "there is no antimemetics division" book multiple times today because i wanted to start reading it and seconds later forgot about it and put it down again.

me: i want to read this
my adhd brain: there is no book. no, this is not your first time reading it.

things I read in the datasheet:
"CONFIDENTIAL AND PROPRIETARY
NOT FOR PUBLIC RELEASE"

you sure this should be public onsemi?

my collection of definitely not original parts is now almost complete. just waiting for that C245 tip now.
oh and they all come with the same 6-pin Hirose connector. the NT115-A *feels* stock, but the manufacturer sure doesn't ship it with that connector usually :D

it tells you a lot about the electronics scene that stackexchange is among the less toxic places...

all in all, my take on this is: ehhhh, let's see where this goes. it's not proof of work so it's not using huge amounts of electricity and it discards unnecessary information so it doesn't have boundless growth.

also the fog protocol allows users to participate in the network without having to run a full node. cool.

i'm still skeptical, but it's not an *obvious* grift. the biggest issue is centralization of initial supply though.

this means that mobilecoin has control over the *initial* supply of the coins and can keep volatility down insofar as they are the only ones who can sell you coins. this plays well with all the AML and KYC stuff.

dunno where i saw this, but i think they want to link prices to current exchange rates so that you don't get ripped off. given that signal wants to roll this out to potentially millions of users, this would kinda prevent the speculation and volatility (hopefully).

fees: there's transaction fees for validator nodes which confirm a transaction. this gives an incentive to run validation nodes, but not to build up excessive capacity, because rewards are limited.

afaict there's no "mining" in the classical sense. in the pdf the tombstone block, the first block comes with a large fee which ofc gets paid out to the first validator.

paper for those reading along at home: github.com/mobilecoinfoundatio

okay so first off: scalability. 7.3 "once a transaction has been validated most of its data is discarded, and never gets stored in the blockchain"

that means the blockchain isn't growing for all eternity and you basically keep a consensus who currently owns what.

Bandcamp did a great job URLizing the new Keygen Church album title keygenchurch.bandcamp.com/albu

buying old chips from aliexpress is like a reverse djinn: you rub it with some acetone and the part you wished for disappears in black paint and reveals a mundane disappointment (e.g. SRAM)

when women dominated computer programming we got compiler research and moon landing software running on 4MB of memory

when men dominated computer programming we got two dot com bubbles, mass scale invasion of privacy and "software engineers" producing 3 million lines of completely bogus garbage code per day to the point that you need a supercomputer to run a chat program

it's wild, as far as i can think back i wanted to go to a demoscene event but could never make it. revision 2020 was the first i could actually make because it was online :D

also how have i known about the scene longer than chaos related events but never made it to the former...

Show thread
