I DON’T WANT SELF DRIVING CARS

I want boring things like public transit
that comes so regularly I don't
need to check a schedule.
I want fast passenger rail so accessible and
easy it’s preferable to suffering airports.

I want cities that aren’t built
around cars-as-default

@marble @OCRbot sorry I don't know why my browser decided to hit send on that.

I was going to say; Singapore has some decent public transport. When I went to visit we missed our train. 3 minutes later the next one was there.

It was quite amazing in contrast to the lacklustre Australian public transport I'm used to

@dave @marble If your answer is to move city/country then that's not really a solution. That's sticking your head in the sand and pretending things cannot change.

@welt Couldn't disagree more, but I'm not sure if you're looking to debate it.
@welt

I’d love to see more walking/bicycle focused design for sure.
@welt

I was thinking more from the original post about the difference between infrastructure using horses before cars, not so much into the future but looking back and thinking about how crazy clean we've gotten with gasoline engines, especially with a cat. converter, and how spoiled we are in terms of horsepower e.g. my 300cc bike is fine even for highway riding. I agree with you that the current city/suburb design is a nightmare, but I also think that we're moving towards a more decentralized mode of living generally, so I'm optimistic about the intersection of interstates highways and cars.

@marble @OCRbot what if we do both and have self driving cars that just drive to the tracks and hitch themselves onto the train

@tykayn still less "effort per passenger" than self driving cars tho...

@marble I've been doing a lot of thinking about this and I figured there's room for self driving vehicles but not in the space companies expect.

e.g. I'd like self driving wheelchairs for old people who need help getting from place to place. I see them sometimes crossing the road or just slowly walking over it without paying attention to traffic and it'd be nice if the chair could navigate itself to their destination safely.

@marble this already exists, just move to any big city in Europe.

@marble OMG, you and I will get along really well!

I used to be all-in on self-driving. But I've been recently convinced against it. The bigger issue being car-centrism.
