Ramble, Scotland, US Politics

One of the factors that drove immigration from Scotland to the USA was the systematic destruction of the crofter way of life in the Highlands after the second Jacobite Rebellion. The traditional chiefton was meant to hold lands for the whole clan as it was people rather than land that counted. It's why Mary Queen of Scots was called that rather than Mary, Queen of Scotland. But with the joining of the crowns there started to be a change in culture.

The lairds wanted the land to be more profitable and crofting was subsistence farming. So they got men like Patrick Sellers to burn the crofts down and to brutalise the crofters. Leaving the crofters little choice but to leave and end up in cities like Industrial Revolution Glasgow taking up jobs in Factories and the mines. Some of those folk then went on to America to find a new way of life. scotland.org.uk/infamous-scots

While those immigrants continued on, folks in Scotland knew they needed to leave if they wanted to better themselves, pretty much until the late 1960s with oil. Scotland is very complicit in things like the slave trade, which we Scots are acknowledging now. Scotland faces some huge challenges like Democrats in the US do now. You have a populace divided in what the future should be. For hundreds of years people were fed lies about democracy. We were divided.
