“We built a world where I could hit an emergency alarm button and walk off at my stop, feeling like I just saved this girl’s life, who didn’t need saving, without losing a minute of my day, if I wanted to. We built a world for convenience, not community.”

In case you missed it: Erynn Brook wrote about the time when she helped a girl who was about to have a seizure:

Oh my goodness I've just learned a thing about The Matrix that causes it to make a lot more sense: In the original script the humans were used as neural network compute clusters by the Machines and as a crucial component of The Matrix itself.

Which is why humans who were aware of the simulation could control aspects of The Matrix - their minds were part of its foundation.

Unfortunately the test audiences had trouble understanding this concept so the studio changed the human role to "batteries".

The purpose of putting pronouns in your bio is that most trans people must do this to avoid misgendering, and if only trans people have their pronouns on display it makes it really easy to single us out whether we want to be open about it or not, which leads to harassment.

If you're cis, put your pronouns in your bio. It helps trans people stay safe online.

Not "cis man/woman" or "male/female" or "mr/ms/mrs". The pronouns. Type out the pronouns. Whatever else you add is fine, but please just take 3 seconds, type the pronouns, hit save.

If you don't, trans people have no way of knowing whether you're a safe cis person or not, and I will generally assume you are not since you haven't put forth the minimal possible effort to help protect us.

We got a stipend from the Social Impact Lab! A cool opportunity for us to work on ourselves and our ideas. We not only convinced the jury but also the audience.

@zalandocalrissian @leah @pinkprius In any case, we will obviously remain calm, and see where things are headed. Public panic doesn't help anybody.
I get why you might be stressing out over this, but moving the stress to others is just not helpful.

Oh nooo. Nooooooo.
One big project at work is building a collaborative editor in javascript with python as a backend, and… emojis have different lengths in js and python. JS counts codepoints, not characters. And we basically do stuff like "keep 17 characters, insert 'hello'" over the network. Oh nooooooo. This is so gonna cost me a whole week of work.

The postponed bookclub for The Fifth Season (NK Jemisin) is finally here! I was so sad to cancel it due to flooding.
So, I finally finished the geode cupcakes and jewel shard cake that I planned weeeeeeks ago. The geodes and shards have been living in a box for a month but it's just sugar so they're fine.
Tutorials for geodes if you wanna try making some: This is what I used for these. This is one I've used previously which I think worked better.

I scratched my new-pet-project itch and built myself a slide / presentation framework heavily inspired by reveal.js:

It's built with vue and features fragments, nested slides, an overview mode and a speaker mode with notes.
There is no usage docs yet, I am still thinking about how to release it, just as a vue component or as a vuepress theme (what I am currently developing it with).

I am a huge fan of inline svg and using css on svg. Sadly, color functions are still missing from css BUT you can do a lot with hsl and var and calc. So I give you: Rotating a single hue value of a svg in the browser.

Using `toFixed(2)` in my `font-size` randomize code results in this, which is also even faster. Lessons learned, don't use too many different font sizes (nobody is going to see the difference between 0.54321em and 0.54322em anyways).

Okay, mystery "solved". I randomly set the `font-size` of each element, this seems to trip some font cache in chrome? Getting rid of the random size completely removes the performance issue.

I just encountered the weirdest chrome performance issue. I have a page with a lot of absolutely positioned single char divs, and… the page takes 1s longer to render if I have a long `font-family` declaration. Is chrome evaluating the font stack for every text fragment separately? #4-5 are with `font-family: Roboto`. #2-3 with `font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, "Segoe UI", Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, "Fira Sans", "Droid Sans", "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif`. I mean. What?

A while back, @glasnt asked Twitter for features people would like to see in a conference/CfP system. I've put together a response für pretalx, showing which features are supported, which are planned, and how the community can help:
