huh, TIL that most English Homer translation do not retain the original metre. Which makes sense, considering how English works!

… but I also found a translation of the Odyssey in strict hexameter (by Rodney Merrill), and while it's not a good introduction to the text, it's amazing to read.

From the author's commentary/justification:

> English, in large part uninflected and monosyllabic,
> furnishes me more spondaic diction than some other tongues would.
