New Dune movie trailer, and it looks like Yet Another Movie, sadly. Give me daring aesthetics!

Das Pixel 4a ist jetzt vorbestellbar, Lieferung Mitte Oktober.

It's nice to see that my tastes have not evolved since I was four and we got to draw treasure maps in kindergarten. Admittedly, this one has less deadly spikes, and both Past Tobi and Present Tobi are a bit disappointed. (It is plenty deadly, though.)

The full version has goals and way more labels, they have been redacted to protect the innocent (me) and the guilty (also me).

Show thread

Oh wait, half the remaining labels are in German, oops. The one on the left is "dead end", the upper right one is "venueless foothills", the lower right one "Swamps of Sadness" (yes, the horse-killing ones).

My current todo list is not so much too long as it is fragmented, so I drew* a roadmap. This is the version with most project names redacted, enjoy!

* I cannot, in fact, draw.

An excellent overview over the new AVIF web image format, where (and how) to use it. I had completely missed that this is a thing. With plenty of comparisons with PNG, JPEG, SVG and WEBP!

Links folgen.

Note that ... and … are not the same thing, and I’m talking about the latter.

Confession: I feel an involuntary secret kinship with people using “…”, and it’s more often good than not. (But sometimes it’s terrifying.)

"We didn't call it fuzzing back in the 1950s, but it was our standard practice to test programs by inputting decks of punch cards taken from the trash.

We also used decks of random number punch cards. We weren't networked in those days, so we weren't much worried about security, but our random/trash decks often turned up undesirable behavior.

Every programmer I knew used the trash-deck technique."

If you're particularly into being angsty, feel free to reflect on how the price of your gift reflects on your relative status, your income, and your relationship with your host. You're welcome.

Solution: If you stay at somebody's place and can afford it, you bring a of gift. Chocolates or alcohol for the boring, more individual gifts for the daring. Actually handing over the gift involves a cultural dance of "oh, just because it's tradition BUT ALSO WE RESPECT YOU".

German lesson of the day: "Gastgeschenk": "Host present"

This usually means "present you give to your host", but it can also mean "present BY the host", and while this is less likely, the ambiguity is enough to enough to trigger -style anxiety. Who gifts the gifts?!

Thanks to , I learnt about django-seal, which raises warnings for implicit db access on related objects.

I'm torn between "I want this EVERYWHERE, NOW" and "I actually just want it during tests, and I don't want to add ".seal()" everywhere in my codebase.

If you do this, feedback is welcome: This is a pre-release version of the big upcoming v2, so there's still time to make it better.
