I know stuff is going on in Germany so don't expect replies from this instance, but if anybody knows how to set up an #openvpn (the swedish #privatevpn specifically) on #deepin or perhaps another #debian-based distro, and can explain it like to a two-year-old, I'd be most grateful.
@SolSoCoG This: https://entropia.de/GPN18/en It seems a lot of people will be attending! I have to look for the config, I couldn't find it yesterday, I might actually ask them to do it remotely, come to think of it.
@windruffle I'd be happy to offer some help.
But first a question, how did https://privatevpn.com/ earn your trust? Reviews for it seem to be rare and mixed: https://thatoneprivacysite.net/2017/03/31/privatevpn-review/ and https://thebestvpn.com/reviews/privatevpn/. Besides trust issues with regards to their logging policy it seems like they are not providing you with ovpn configuration files which make the setup on your PC easier.
@sandbag_attitude Indeed, my husband recently saw that (it is a new thing, if I understand correctly, it was trustworthy before) and wanted to switch, but we paid a few months upfront. It does, however, work well enough for the use I make of it, so I'm quite happy to go along with it for now. As @SolSoCoG mentioned I have tried to look for a config to import on their website but found none. Might ask them to do intervene remotely? I need handholding😳
@windruffle
I understand - I mean technically they would be able to view your activity even if they say otherwise so I would be wary of what I access through them.
To get set up, there is a guide for network manager which should also be installed on Deepin: https://privatevpn.com/support/getting-started/linux/linux/network-manager-tun-recommended
@sandbag_attitude well at present given the state of my knowledge I just need to watch season 3 of Lucifer! 😅 (Thank you I am having a look)
@sandbag_attitude I made it! It was the guide I followed yesterday but I think I skipped that direction bit... and there are bits missing on the Deepin interface that were mentioned here. Thank you! We'll switch vpn as soon as we can :/
@windruffle
Glad you worked it out :)
Here is good guidance on choosing a VPN provider https://thatoneprivacysite.net/choosing-the-best-vpn-for-you/
@windruffle
On a side note, I am not sure what you are planning to use the VPN for, but:
If you are using your internet browser make sure you disable webRTC through a plugin, otherwise your real IP may be revealed.
If you are using torrent software with this guide, it may leak your real IP address too.
Some VPN providers offer their own client software with a kill-switch, it disables your internet when the connection to the VPN drops, thus preventing the exposure of your real IP.
@sandbag_attitude privatevpn has a kill switch, and when I check what IP is being leaked it's never mine, but we'll definitely change over when the time's up. I do torrent... But so far it has seemed smooth and safe. But we'll keep it in mind!
@sandbag_attitude thank you, I do know that website, it was very interesting!
@windruffle @sandbag_attitude
Yes I'd ask them for support if they wouldn't offer ovpn files.👌
@windruffle there is usually a connection manager which has in most cases a vpn tab/option on debian(based distros). You'd need to download the openvpn config from privatevpn if they have any and import that config at the vpn tab. One question, what kind of stuff is supposed to be going on in German? What am I missing out on?
