if you think “humans are inherently selfish” that says more about you than it does about humanity

@thisisleeloo I think humans are neither inherently selfish nor altruistic. How people behave depends on the circumstances and beliefs. It's very unlikely that high level beliefs are somehow codified in the genome, and there's no evidence for that.

In general people follow a principle of reciprocation. If they're treated badly they will respond in kind and if they're treated well then you're more likely to see prosocial behavior. It doesn't always happen, but mostly.

@cjd The conclusion that “maybe shitty people are drawn to economics and are then surrounded by an echo chamber of egocentrism” seems the most intelligent.

Like, any given econ course is teaching you ~capitalist economics~ and its hard to justify any charity under capitalism, because eventually that currency is just gonna roll up to the most successfully selfish person anyway.

@ThisIsLeeloo Ehh apparently they also found that economics students become more shittier and shittier people as they continue in the course, self-selection alone doesn't explain it.

@cjd hence my point about echo chamber of egocentrism.

Shitty person meets other shitty person, and they feel empowered and validated by one another.
